Sandburg Women Can’t Complete Comeback vs. Blackhawks

The Carl Sandburg College women’s basketball team nearly climbed out of a double-digit hole, but Southeastern (Iowa) pulled away down the stretch to beat the Chargers 65-53 on Tuesday night at John M. Lewis Gymnasium.

KEY MOMENTS

  • Sandburg pulled within 25-22 when Cora Neal (Monmouth, Ill./Monmouth-Roseville) beat the shot clock buzzer, but the Blackhawks (11-3) scored seven in a row and 13 of the next 15 to help take a 38-26 lead into halftime.
  • Six straight points got the Chargers (4-6) within 47-43 midway through the third quarter, and Sandburg trailed 51-45 going into the fourth.
  • A jumper by Danayzia Stuckey (Peoria, Ill./Limestone) cut Sandburg’s deficit to 54-49 with 6:40 to play, but the Blackhawks answered with consecutive backdoor layups from Miah Shelby and Benedetta Morpurgo to push their lead back to nine.

SANDBURG STANDOUT
Freshman guard Hailey Lovetinsky (Overland Park, Kan./Spring Hill) had team highs of 13 points, five rebounds and three assists. Lovetinsky scored 10 of her points in the second half and went 3 of 7 on 3-pointers.

OTHER TOP CHARGERS

  • Freshman forward Yvonne Mixon (Galesburg, Ill./Galesburg) had 10 points on 4-for-7 shooting and added four boards.
  • Fellow freshman forward Kennedy Jackson (Peoria, Ill./Limestone) added nine points, also on 4-of-7 shooting.

FOR THE BLACKHAWKS
Shelby led all scorers with 21 points and added five rebounds. Andreisha Waller added 14 points while going 7 of 10 from the floor, and Shaniya Caldwell had 12 points and nine rebounds.

UP NEXT
The Chargers will travel to face Culver-Stockton JV at 5:30 p.m. Thursday in the opening game of a men’s-women’s doubleheader.
